Free. There’s a lot of talks these days about freedom – what it should be… and what it is not. I have no qualms in admitting that I struggle with many modern definitions of what it means to be free.
Some, like George Orwell, have said that:
“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.”
Malcolm X said this:
Former Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and Ronald Reagan chimed in with:
“If you want total security, go to prison. There you’re fed, clothed, given medical care and so on. The only thing lacking… is freedom. “(D.D.E.)
And then there was Jesus.
He had a very unique way of explaining what it means to be free:
“Hold to My teaching…” “You will know the truth and the truth will set you free”.

Maybe it’s the idealist in me, but with all the ‘crazy’ out there, swirling around my days, with every opinion being reported on every news broadcast– it brings me such ultimate comfort to know that my freedom is not dependent upon anyone except myself and how closely I choose to adhere to His teaching. Isn’t that such a relief?!
In a day in age where everyone is fighting for their own definition of personal freedom, I want to chase after the only freedom that will truly make me free.
Pray with me:
Father, Thank you for your offer of true freedom. Today, I purpose in my heart to let Your Truth set me free. I know that nothing in this world can threaten the freedom I have in You through Jesus Christ, the Word of God. I set my heart to be tender to Your Teachings, and I ask that you would strengthen me to hold fast to them. Thank You, Father, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
